As for murder rate, adjust it for demographics, and it's the same.

I don't know about the U.S. murder rate vs. Canada, but I do recall round numbers about gun deaths in the U.S. versus Western Europe and Japan. We got 20000+/year, they got about 100/year. Yes, they're all smaller, maybe by a factor of 5, not a factor of 200. I don't quite know what kind of demographics would make the rates the same. Maybe the kind you read about at aynrand.org?
