I think the configuration can be much cheaper. You don't need a harddisk (a fast cd is enough).

I think persistent storage is pretty important, for saved games, downloaded games, and such.

You can use a slower CPU (according to the lower resolution) and a company can buy everything a lot cheaper. I think the whole price would be below 150$.

Let's not forget about the logic to make all this crap run together. Add in the price of a really crappy motherboard ($50) for integration costs.

I'm not saying it can't be cheaper. While a CD rom would be much cheaper than a HD ($20 vs. $75), it would not run existing PC sofware unmodified. If you want to drop the PC compatibility issue, there are lots of other routes. The prices I listed are already volume discounted for the most part.

Revised prices for a "Glide" console, running off CD, which would run most glide games with little modification:

CPU ($40-50), Banshee $30, A3D $10, 48 MB RAM ($40), Glue+Case/PS ($30) Batteries ($10) CD ROM ($20). Total Cost: $180... Sell for $225-275. Costs can be lowered by integrating graphics/sound into glue logic.
