On first blush - as a consumer I like the idea of an open cable box. Does Cube benefit or get hit if an open cable standard is pushed?

Circuit City Lets Cable Down
Washington -- In a setback for the cable industry, Circuit City Stores Inc. is urging the Federal Communications Commission to shorten the Jan. 1, 2005, deadline for the phase-out of set-tops with integrated-security and channel-surfing functions.

The cable industry was hopeful that Circuit City would back the industry's call to the FCC to eliminate the phase-out not only because it was contrary to law, but also because it would deny consumers access to perhaps the most affordable advanced set-tops.

"The record clearly supports a phase-out by an earlier date, and it is wholly within the FCC's discretion to assure competition by shortening the deadline," Circuit City said in a filing Wednesday at the FCC.

However, Circuit City said it would back cable's position that analog-only boxes should be exempt from rules requiring a separate security interface. Also, the company, agreeing with cable, said the FCC should remove the exemption that it gave to open-video systems.
