Well, you don't *have* to have a CD-R or CD-RW to save the video captures (any media will do, at 10MB/minute of video according to the spec sheet on ADPT's website), but of course you'll need one to save and distribute in CD-video format.

I don't think writeable DVD drives are readily available to consumers (at least I haven't heard of one), and I don't know if they write conventional CD formats.

But a conventional CD-R or CD-RW drive is available fairly inexpensively these days, the media is cheap and you can get over 60 minutes of video on one, so I don't see a pressing need for the DVD format yet, except to play back commercial movies. If you have an interest in or a need for VideOH!, the price of the drive and media shouldn't be much of an obstacle.

As far as I know, the DVD playback drives shipping with many computers are fully capable of playing all CD formats.
