Lachesis.. I will begin with, this ain't no ordinary October we're going into! You can't project this one based on past. A few things differ:

..President's scandal
..World commodity and market declines that have been in progress for some time
..Elections
..Japan will come up with some kind of banking plan, never enough
..We've had a substantial correction already in most of the market
..Interest rate cuts?
..EU
..IMF, currencies, etc

The general instability we've had will sustain market volatility.. a lot of house cleaning has already been accomplished. Lately I've been picking up disaster stories and huge worry stocks.. CIEN 12 5/8, LEH calls, ABTE calls, TAVA at 4.75, ORCL low 20's

Lots of good stocks out there.. oils will run into a double bottom buy next. Some financials.. looking at BKB

Don't know much about ALSC, but if MU is good then it should do well also.

Last note.. at the height of the real estate boom in 1987 I received a number of unsolicited real estate calls asking if I wanted to sell. Yesterday, for the first time in 12 years I got two on the home answering machine. Who knows what that means.

My .02 on October. I have also been pondering the possibility of a big sellof in October - so has everyone else - which is why we may not get it. Also, the market is moving quicker than it did previously - what I mean is that, for example, buy/sell programs used to kick in at 3:00 now they kick in at 2:00; triple witching used to take place on Friday - now it happens Thursday. There is a chance that this Aug/Sept. crash was the long anticipated Oct one - only sooner than expected.

>>>>Jim, Clint, any one of you care to speculate on October?

Same call as before.....Rally thru mid OCT and profit taking by the time MSFT reports earnings. Don't know the magnitude of selloff yet.
