Ken--Please keep us informed. My understanding is that the bill has been marked up. What are the chances it could undergo major revisions that would in fact protect those companies that did the right thing and disclosed early? Is there an industry related link where we can track the progress or is Thomas the best place for this? "flatsville"

Germany Y2k update
------------------

There are many indications that Germany is seriously lagging Y2k remediation efforts. Some indications are:

- the issue not mentioned at all during the current election campaign, as far as I have seen.

- almost not mentioned at all in any business magazine; overwhelmingly only the Euro dollar and consequences are discussed.

- pressure by large banks and large enterprises on smaller companies to be Euro compliant ASAP.

- In Juli 1998 the department responsible for electrical utilities ordered an investigation into the Y2k status of utilities. In the news article that mentioned this, it was remarked that suppliers of non compliant systems did not see any significant increase in ordering replacement systems (at least not from the smaller/local utilities). This is very discouraging.

- In IT/electronics shops very few signs of products being 'y2k compliant' or similar statements.

- Almost no (extensive) coverage on national TV.

The areas most seriously threatened are IMO:

- local government
- health care
- SME business; especially manufacturing
- smaller / local utilities; possibly also drinking water delivery
- local transportation

The most influential political (liberal) magazine 'Der Spiegel' has a series on 'Germany in 2000'. Issues like education, job market etc are discussed in detail. No mentioning of Y2k; no special edition dedicated to Y2k up till now.

b.t.w. France is in even worse shape... almost all Y2k sites are about 1/1/2000 celebrations in Paris and other cities.
