Gerald, I'm not sure of your statement. Who is "you" and who is "me" in your following statement. I think I know but I wanted to confirm.

"I've never understood the "if you take care of me I'll give up my rights" mentality It's like being a pet."

Exactly what rights have "me" given up to "you" in this statement? Although most Canadians complain about their levels of Government, we do not have the same level of animosity and distrust of Government that Americans have. Remember one thing - the people / voters of the country are the Government! They are our pet. If the Government ends up not performing to our majority interests and beliefs and policies, then they are out on the next election. And unlike most Americans who do not actively participate in their country's democratic process (i.e. They dont vote - only 45% do), the vast majority of Canadians do exercise their democratic power - usually over 70% voter turnout at any elections. We take our democratic rights seriously. Since our politicians know that, they dont generally stoop to the dirty grungy campaign tactics that the US politicians practice during elections. Issues are actually discussed and people vote for parties that have similar beliefs as the voter.

So, I dont exactly understand what rights I have given up. In the perspective of the recent gun law here, the government has spoken for the vast majority of the people who want a safer country to live in. Restricting the movement and ownership of guns and banning clearly non-recreational weapons goes far toward meeting that goal. The crime statistics & gun usage between US and Canada shows proof of the success of policies like this.

Of course, these types of policies would never fly when powerful lobby groups like the NRA can manipulate governement officials to the extent that they do. But lobby groups are a whole different matter.

Cheers!
