Sun, they have patented the apparatus and the method. The method, however, seems to be the one that DX6 uses so for all practical purposes 3dfx has patented multitexturing.

What gets me is that TNT got no advantage from using multitexturing anyway. In multitexturing mode the fillrate is reduced by 1/2 so what's the point? Why not just do the texturing in 2 passes using 2 pixels per clock cycle instead of 1 pass at 1 pixel per clock cycle?
