Inventory is needed in the consumer distribution model since most consumers come in and purchase their machines on the spot. They want to take them home. DELL is starting to market to the consumers but only high end machines. My suggestion was to continue using the indirect model for low cost "I want it now" platforms and to go direct with higher platforms. So, although your points are accurate, I don't think they apply. Furthermore I don't think that DELL would succeed in selling <$1000 machines direct via the internet... which is why they don't bother.
