I suspect Microsoft was given a limited use license to incorporate the feature into DX, but DX is useless without hardware which can execute the given multi-texturing. MS can't make a different MT for DX without hardware that can use it.

MS does have an interest in using the features of TDFX' products. There are a lot of V2 owners. Accessing V2 MT via DX makes sense for MS. (Does this post need an acronym glossary?:)

MS can put an automatic banana peeler driver into DX, but it doesn't do anyone much good without the actual banana peeler. :-)

In that case they'd better get in bed with Gates and offer him a chair in the board so that Microsoft will
not replace that method with something else in the next release of DxD.
