Well I guess I don't know enough about DXD. But it seems to me that MS could make a generic API to multitexturing capabilities and let each chip maker link in theirown driver into it. That would remove the 3Dfx monopoly. Do we have a windows developer here who can explain what DXD brings to the table and what is left the to vendors?

It's not clear that DX multitexturing needs a 3Dfx license.

You can have a patent on the automobile, but you can't patent calling a cab. DX may ask the driver/hardware to do some multitexturing. It probably doesn't matter exactly how the chipset does it.

On the other hand, DX may be calling he cab in a manner that best benefits V2 and TNT (which would only be logical) and this might provide a performance boost for V2 and 3Dfx licensees relative to other single pass multitexturing designs.
