It's naive to believe Starr's purpose in getting into so much detail about Bill's sexual exploits was some high-minded attempt to get at the facts. His gratuity was obviously political. The aim of the pornographer is not primarily to entertain people but to make money, i.e. to promote his own self-interest. Starr's purpose was also to promote his own self-interest, and that of his well-heeled conservative patrons. Think about it. Reread Starr's own comments about porno. It doesn't matter if its purpose is commercial, political or artistic, he appeared to be saying. He betrayed his own values by descending into this stuff. Maureen Dowd's column, flaky as it was, makes that point.

P.S. Why the venomous tone, Larry? Aren't you happy with your life?
