IMF lauds India but warns about near term risks.

JPR:

The IMF, in its analysis of the Indian economic situation, prepared on August 13, did not directly evaluate the economic fallout from the sanctions imposed on India by the U S and some of its allies after the Indian nuclear tests, but it said the sanctions added to the nation's "uncertainties''. Commenting on the report, the Wall Street Journal observed today "India has stood apart from many Asian countries by restricting the flow of investment in and out of its economy.

''During Asia's 'go-go years' those restrictions were considered a major impediment to growth, the Journal said, adding those restrictions were considered a major impediment to growth.

But with the region now suffering from massive investment outflows, economists have begun to take a second look at India, China and other nations that impose currency controls, it said.
