Don't think SA would want to kill the golden goose.

Joe:

I respectfully disagree. Controlling industry within a culture/society arises from within the parent society. South Africa is in metamorphosis, not transition. De Beers did not arise from the African culture and represents European opportunism. Right or wrong, Black Africans resents the European Diamond industry and I'll wager nationalization will occur.

Kill the golden Goose -- no, just cut out the middleman. Everyone knows the diamond market has false support. Personally, I would not want to be long on diamonds or De Beers.

Ciao, Ted

Good answer. De Beers is not a South African company solely.
They originated there but are active globaly. As far as a secure investment goes they are about the most secure. They have weathered SA for so long they would have learned about precaution. The market they lead would teach them this valuable trait as well. They've been doing it for over a hundred years along with the likes of Phelps Dodge and Homestake, I would not worry about them going away either.
