One topic missing is new fab construction isn't likely next year or in 2000, I read an article earlier that indicated that a major Taiwanese foundry was in negotiation to potentially purchase an existing fab from one of 4 international manufacturers, rather than
investing/building a new fab. There are many fabs now closed, some of
them less than 2 years old, that probably could be purchased at 1/2
the cost of building a new fab from scratch. Until new fab construction resumes at a pace of 3-5 fabs a year there won't likely
be any huge new orders to sustain semi-equip growth at more than
"subsistence" levels for 2-4 years.
