The ugliness we are seeing in Congress should come as no surprise to anyone. Only extremists in both parties seem to be able to mobilize enough people to get elected. Moderation doesn't build excitement or convince people to vote. Only special interests and causes do that. How do you break through the apathy that most of the satisfied middle class feels? They hate what's going on, but there doesn't seem to be any way to get them involved.
