Santa Clara, California, Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp. cut prices
on some of its computer-networking products for small businesses by as
much as 49 percent, a move that will heat up competition with No. 2
network-equipment maker 3Com Corp.

Intel, the No. 1 computer-chip maker, reduced prices on its InBusiness
products as much as $300, pushing the price for an eight-port Switch
Plus product to $399 from $699. The product is used to link personal
computers in networks. A four-port hub was cut to $125 from $245.

Intel has been pushing into the market for cheap networking gear,
including network interface cards and other products and technology
for small and home-office businesses. Such products are expected to be
one of the fastest-growing parts of the networking market.

3Com is now the leading seller of gear for that market. The Santa Clara,
California-based company has been hurt by fierce price-cutting by Intel,
which is trying to boost its market share.
