It's calculated in a macro way net for the whole country: current income less spending. Current spending on borrowed money is a negative contribution. Interest received on money lent is a positive contribution, until they pay no more ...

Mike,

401k money is pretax money and thus probably not included in the gross income number Joe mentioned. That means that savings rate is understated by 401k contributions, assuming one thinks they are savings (and I do).
