Hi rudedog,

More than 90% of corporate IT purchases are from indirect (channel) providers, so I don't quite understand your statement.

I apologize for not communicating more clearly. What I meant was the direct model currently works better for corporate purchases than for consumer purchases, because there is no way for consumers to purchase (on-line) their first machine from Dell.

But in a couple years when set-top boxes all contain web access, consumers will be able to order their first machine from Dell.

And I'm sure they'll enjoy the experience more than standing in line, talking to someone who's half educated about the product; instead they'll get information as fast as they can read it, and can configure it exactly how they want instead of having to take what's available in inventory. Dell ships in about three days now. I'm about to order another (my third in 6 months).

I realize that much of this can be achieved with their catalog and a phone, but the computer is better because you don't have to add numbers -- it'll recalculate it for you. Leave the lower functions to the tools, and that frees us up to do higher and higher things.

Enjoy,
KenB
