Clinton is America's first adolescent president and the media have taken advantage of the target he presents to debase the image of the White House and to turn its occupants into the characters of a soap. Adolescent presidents sold as entertainment by the media can get to be a habit, as mad or tragically ineffectual emperors became a habit in Rome: so watch out.

The warning is addressed to goggle-eyed, fast-talking, fast-typing 'news' consumers and producers.

Americans would do better to read history and study its lessons -- which are all about liberty -- than to try to become experts in the minutiae of peccadilloes and dirt.
