Actually I think a disc shifts and pinches a nerve. My back slips in and out all the time.

I have a friend who has had nine back operations. By the time he was 43 he couldn't bend enough to tie his shoes or pick up anything over ten pounds.

I have periodic back trouble that usually gets triggered by something like bending over to pick up the newspaper or something. I haven't had any trouble for three years; that time I missed a week of work. I couldn't even sit down without it hurting.

I went to physical therapy for six weeks before it finally got back to normal.
