Re: "Speaking of layoffs...how long has it been since you were layed off from AMD? How fast do you think the K7 will be demoed on Oct 15th and what process?"

I have never been layed off (or fired) from any company.

How fast will the K7 be? I really don't know for sure. It depends on their design approach. High frequency and less work per clock ala RISC or more work per clock and lower frequency ala cyrix. One thing is certain, no one has been able to do both high frequency and more work per clock although Intel has come the closest. I expect the K7 to appear on their .25u process because a new device on a new process is too risky. Nobody wants to debug two things at once. AMD however has made some really stupid decisions in the past so anything is possible.

Don't forget:
The product that will save AMD is always the next one.
The product that will finally catch Intel is always the next one.
The quarter when AMD will turn the corner is always the next one.

Jim, <how long has it been since you [Elmer] were layed off from AMD?>
According to his several posts, he must be a former
second-hand engineer at AMD 29k-project. Apparently
during the tough days of K5 project, the 29k-project
was terminated due to inability to compete with other
embedded RISC offerings.
In big companies, all talented engineers from the
trminated projects are usually re-employed
for other projects within the same company - it is
too costly to lose these valuable investments.
However, the deadwood and other
non-reemployable morons just do not get an internal
offer and "voluteered" to "resign" (without any
material compensation though). Therefore,
within the formal definition of a "layoff", he
is probably telling the truth (formally) :-)
However, no one must be fooled by this formality,
a loser remains the loser, just more hostile.
We should trust nothing he has said on this forum.

Jim,

I don't think they're going to demo at MPU Forum, but at Comdex in November. That's what has been stated before by AMD.
