Michael,

you have a much broader definition of derivatives than I do. To me a convertible is primarily a bond with an embedded option. Just because something has an option component doesn't make it a derivative in its own right.

I submit the original US financial derivative was & remains a paycheck in lieu of currency and coinage....

In fact, if someone is to apply the purest definition of a derivation, one probably has to go back to the derivation for money when exchanging fresh eggs for pioneer medical help when the doctor required/requested needed cash, ala Dr.Quinn, medicine woman.

....or maybe it was when the first piece of papyrus was scribbled on w/a glowing charcoal brand fresh from an ancient Egyptian campfire, a scribbled I.O.U. and given in exchange for some good or service, or gambling debt...
