<True, but National Semiconductor is an Intel lackey. >

Herb, you need to catch up on Wintel politics. National is definitely not an Intel lackey.

<I think that the change in the Cyrix deal changes the cost structure on low end PCs for IBM and will probably result in consolidation of their consumer product line.>

IBM in their low end home Aptiva line uses AMD k-6 chips not Cyrix so I'm not sure what Cyrix wanting to shift their manufacturing to their parent company has to do with IBMs product line.

<I don't necessarily think that IBM is making a Power PC chip that will emulate a Pentium II as a mode switchable added feature set. But, it is within reason that they could.>

Well I don't know Herb, anything is possible but I don't think anything like this is likely. IBM seems happy enough making PPCs for Apple and for their high end stuff while maintaining a lucrative relationship with Wintel for their low and mid-end stuff. As I pointed out IBM intends to use it's copper and SOI technologies to enhance their Wintel lines as well as using it in their PPC manufacture obviously. Rich

HerbVic, >>> I don't necessarily think that IBM is making a Power PC chip that will emulate a Pentium II as a mode switchable added feature set. But, it is within reason that they could. <<<

A year or so ago, it was rumored that IBM was going to produce the PowerPC 615 - this was to be your dual PPC/Intel instruction set chip. I don't remember why it was dropped. Also, Motorola's and IBM's PowerPC Platforms (PPCPs), also called Common Hardware Reference Platforms (CHRPs), were to be able to support PowerPC and Intel hardware. It's too bad this effort was apparently stopped.

<<It would also run the standard Mac OS and future Mac OS's, so that IBM could broaden production in order to sell the processor to Apple.>>

If IBM were to use the Power PC chip, I don't think they would have the motherboard circuitry setup to run the Mac OS.

My guess is it would have a cheap rom-set with an Intel emulator (not Virtual PC which runs on top of Mac OS).

This emulator would proably be more standalone than VPC to the point of directly booting to Pentium II mode. That way, it cuts out a step and would run a faster emulation than VPC.

PowerPC to Pentium II to Windows X

vs.

PowerPC to Mac OS to Virtual PC to Windows X

Just my guess.
