Why do 350 MHz and 400 MHz and 450 MHz Pentium II's have no problem on the exact same software?

Paul,

My first guess would be a speedpath, which can be avoided by the patch. Chances are that the vast majority of K6-2 350 boxes are shipping with Windows 98, which apparently does not exhibit the problem.

It is also possible that it really is a timing related software bug, which is only exhibited through a specific series of events that does not occur in PII. I wouldn't bet on it though.

It certainly does not bode well for the quality of 400 MHz parts.

ROFL. You guys (on both sides of the fence) really crack me up when you fall all over yourselves trying to spin everything in your favor. Objectivity is completely out the window here.

Gee, Win95 crashes on my Intel PC. It must mean that Intel didn't do enough testing. Damn those microprocessor vendors!

Here is more info directly from MSFT:

The files listed in the RESOLUTION section of this article contain initialization timing loops that fail to execute properly on the AMD-K6-2 processor at speeds of 350MHz and above. Note that this problem is due to limitations of the software algorithms, and is not indicative of a problem with the processor itself, which is functioning properly.
