Alomex "The amount of energy is now distributed over four times the area, that alone reduces the temperature by 75%, then since magnesium conducts so well heat, it never "accumulates" in quite the same way as with your previous flaming laptop." Then, all they have to do is line the inside of the case in asbestos, add an alarm plus a couple of CO2 cartridges (with a emergency button) and you have a blazing laptop. Go AAPL!

You're absolutely correct on the heat issue Alomex. That is the reason heat sinks are made of metal and have fins. The greater surface area increases the transfer rate to the surrounding air. Heat does not build up. Plastic, on the other hand, is heat insulative. It is a strong lite case material suitable for laptops with slower heat engines.

Incidentally, that excess heat that must be drained off comes at an energy penalty. The design of these laptops would allow roughly a 10% to 20% increase in battery life if they were using a Power PC processor instead of the "Intel inside."

God, I love the Internet.

Fun with thermodynamics!!

The amount of energy is now distributed over four times the area, that alone reduces the temperature by 75%, then since magnesium conducts so well heat, it never "accumulates" in quite the same way as with your previous flaming laptop...

The Portege has plenty of heat to go around. Any marketer worth his salt is going to plug the monstrous heat output in Pentium-based laptops as a great way to beat the La Nina-induced savagery this winter.

And, of course, just because the new Portege's magnesium case dissipates heat better doesn't mean that the processor is performing any more efficiently. I realize that this isn't our talking point, but it does bear mentioning.

I'm really looking forward to the release of the new pro models. Unless Apple comes out with a beefed-up iMac, I plan to purchase one of those El Capitan-clad beauties as soon as they're available. I hope Apple is still in business then!
