Patrick, appreciate the information, keep it coming.

You're starting to raise my eyebrows, as I think 3Dfx
needs to get into set-tops, if the Media GX Mxi is
an avenue to that end...... please keep digging.

I am confused on the following:

I've heard that Cyrix is licensing 3dNow! too but I don't know if it will be in the GX.

Pardon the ignorance, but the GX Mxi will not include 3dNow! by
default? Does that make sense if in fact 3Dfx is working on
the project?

Waldeen

Has anyone here used 3D glasses or cares to comment on them? I was surfing the web in search of Banshee and Metabyte offers a bundled deal (Banshee and Glasses for $250). So I'm mostly interested in Metabyte's glasses but comments on other products are wellcomed too. Also, this may sound dumb, but why aren't we replacing out monitors and TVs with a pair of the glasses? They are cheaper, take less space, and give the impression of much bigger screens. What am I missing here?

Of all the MXi info in the pdf file, here's the bits I was most interested in (from the 2nd to the last page):

Tape out 4Q97 (too early for V2 unless they respun, but Banshee 2D was ready)

Production 2H98 (Then we should be hearing more real soon now)

9M transistors (Holy cow!)

PR300-PR400 (This means 233-333 MHz, they need to get it higher)

The DVD looks real good, a box with this chipset could definitely double as a consumer DVD deck. They didn't mention AC3 output, but there shouldn't be any problem including it. Anyone know what kind of selection there is for VIP parts?

Has an ISA bridge, but I don't think a box needs to include any ISA slots.

The audio is dated, but may be sufficient.

Appears to include VGA and TV out.

They should include 10BT in the South Bridge next round.

It won't make a great PC, but would make a nice set-top if it includes enough to run windows CD's.

Cyrix Media Center

Neat features, but probably not viable.

If you put all these eggs in a basket held together by Win95/98 you're going to end up with scrambled eggs. Windows crashes, you lose TV, phone and audio all at once. I think concentrating on a DVD/Game box is a better idea. Windows CE should suffice for that. I don't know how much porting is required to run Windows games on CE, if any.

Motorola needs to make a USB cable modem. That saves needing a 10BT port.
