Jach,

No, rather Cisco will re-aquire these engineers once they have completed their "skunk-work" efforts. Sure there are exceptions, but one thing Cisco has realized is that it costs them less to hire great people by simply purchasing the companies that have great people. It's too expensive to lure them away on a one-off basis. It's a funny thing living here in SV.... eventually everyone works for Cisco..everyone know it, even those that hate the thought. Why? Because Cisco is sucking up everything in their path...

OG

<not good for the long run; this confirms quotes heard from networkers in SV that many talented and great engs are not with csco now but with startups and csco is hiring mediocre engs>

How the hell do you define mediocre engs? The guys who come cheap because they are just out of college? Good Engs != guys make huge salary. Good Engs != guys have 10-15 years of experience, if they could find good engs with lower salary, more power to them. I once worked in IBM after graduating with a BS Computer Engineering degree from a top 10 computer science department in the US. I met guys who were there 15-20 years and they don't know shit about programming. All they knew were Fortran 77 or some primitive PDP 11 assembly code. It was in the early 90's and C++ was gaining popularity, however, they RESIST to learn new things and INSIST on obsolete technology because it makes their life easier. And they were paid twice or 3 times of my salary. Well, after I got my MS Computer Science degree and had them pay for my tuition, I got out of there quick. I found young engineers who are cheap and can adopt to the ever-lasting changes in this industry MUCH more valuable than a bunch of over-paid egotistical jerks. It's who you bring in, not how much you pay.
