In the 1960's almost every job was filled by someone who was self taught, in most cases with no experience who was evaluated to be self-teachable, actually. And if they had a degree at all, had it in some other area. There were few schools that had anything like a CS degree then. People are coming to these jobs with better credentials now, with less on average in the area of basic skills, though.

As I noted to someone else privately, a FORTRAN programmer in 1967 with 3 years experience could make 30K - in 1967 dollars. You do the math.

Well, that's not fair Mark. I made it clear I was only talking about the H1B and economic impacts on our population, and I have no problem with a person's country of origin. Please lets not be moving the target.
