Slowly but surely, I am realizing that most of the shares are being held by twitchy Charles Schwab retail investors.

OC, my humble analysis:

IPO related shares, 10 plus million shares.
approx. 9 million short shares before 7/1/98
Total above, 19 million "sold" to the public, before Jul 98.

Instutional ownership of the the 19 million shares - 12 plus million.
Small retailers - ????
trading houses, boxed shorts - ????

After July 98,
Additional 3 million shares sold to the public by insiders
short interest to 7.4 million shares.

The beta measures an U.S. stock's volatility to the S&P 500.
With a beta of 1.64, AMZN should move 1.64% for every 1% move
in the market. With the Dow down about 2% and the S&P 500 2.2%,
AMZN should be down at least $3.7. In the next few days/hours, this stock's volatility will be more in line with its historical norms.
Maybe the beta's skewed today because most longs are jewish who're
at temples and couldn't call their brokers.
