China has one of the largest optical cable networks in the world.......

China Develops New Optical Cable Network Technology
October 1, 1998 (BEIJING) -- China is developing optical cable network
technology that will improve the reliability and reduce the cost of Internet
services using telecommunications networks.
The Wuhan Academy of Post and Telecommunications is developing the
new optical cable network technology and equipment.

The new technology combines the advantages of PPP and ATM technology
that is now widely used to connect the Internet with telecommunications
networks, with a performance-to-cost ratio many times higher than that of
existing technology.

The academy's Yu Shaohu said that since China has one of the largest optical
cable networks in the world, the new technology is expected to greatly
expand Internet use.

Herb Bertine, chairman of the Study Group 7 of the International
Telecommunications Union, said that he is surprised to see China has been
developing this technology, and that the technology is unique.

China now has 120 million telephone lines. The figure is expected to hit 180
million by 2000. There are more than a million Internet users in China.

Yu noted that if the technology gets ITU approval, it will create a new
telecommunications technology and equipment market in the country.
