This whole issue of Date of Record vs X Dividend(Distribution) Date is what prompted me to check. I also asked Gary to check.

So far, my Scottsdale rep said that the Date of REcord(which for CSMA was 9/30/98) is a reference date for companies to know who to send dividends to. The X dividend date, typically in the future, is the date the dividend is distributed. My Scottsdale person said that if someone sells CSMA after the Date of REcord, like today, or tomorrow, that a tag is appended to the stock to tell the clearinghouse that spin offs or dividends go along with the parent stock.

Gary, hopefully, will be able to verify this as well. In any event, it means that buyers of the stock up till the day before it goes X dividend will get the spun off shares.

BTW, the other reason I believe the above is correct is this. Since the spinoff amounts to a break out of virtually the whole company, the stock price would have been a lot lower right now.

Check with your broker as well.
