John and Intel Investors - Hewlett Packard's patience with Intel - in view of the Merced delay - can be reasonably explained by the prior post.

Intel is providing the wafer fab process expertise and manufacturing capability to produce an impressive full PA-RISC processor for HP's own Server and Workstation applications.

The massive PA-8500 allows HP to continue their PA-RISC line with higher performance processors during the intervening time between now and full Merced production.

Further, the fact that Intel can produce 140 million transistor CPUs - on a 0.25 micron process probably gives HP a comfort level as to Intel's capability of eventually manufacturing the very complex MERCED - on a 0.18 micron process.

The HP-Intel alliance seems to be quite strong in view of these new CPU developments - as well as the 6 month delay of Merced.
