Craig,

I can't stand Costco either. I can't stand any of the warehouse stores. But I don't claim to be a good proxy for the average American family's shopping habits either:

* I'm single, with limited household space (Silicon Valley housing) so I tend to want small quantities, not bulk.

* I live in a temperate climate and an industry with very casual dress expectations, so I tend not to spend much on clothing.

* My taste in technology (be it stereos or computers) is at the high end, and I can -- for now anyway -- afford it. You don't get the stuff I buy at warehouses.

* Job realities mean that I am lucky to have one meal a day at home.

* The "staples" of that one meal tend to be fresh (baked today) bread, fresh (local, picked recently) fruits and vegetables, fresh meats, poultry, etc. Not really supermarket stuff. Certainly not Costco stuff.

* I don't own a home, so minimal "home improvement" purchases.

* No child-related purchases.

Am I typical? Not likely. Do I shop at Costco? Rarely. Do I still see the value in their model? You bet. Inventory turns win big!
