Tony,

The key here is that the SMP, RAS issues have already been adressed by the ALpha design team.

So what this means is that the K7 and the Alpha CPU's will be interchangeable.

In fact Alpha workstations have been in design and manufacturing for for many years.

Just look at all the problems Intel is having with the Xeon / Chipsets etc. curently.

The beauty of the K7 is the slot A and the fact that they can rely on many years of system design that the DEC guys put in place.

Now, if you are implying that AMD's chips will have much lower reliability than Intels then you are mistaken. The CPU's from any of the major semiconductor vendors today are far more reliable than most of the other components such as Hard Drives, Power supplies etc.

Or perhaps you have been taken in by Pauleron's BS regarding AMD making inferior chips because they are CHEAPER.

Give us a break. Companies use buggy Microsoft products all the time for mission critical applications. It's all about price/performance. If AMD can deliver, the customer will bite.

People have short memories, after all:

Intel retail PC share, 8/97: 84.3%
Intel retail PC share, 8/98: 54.3%

Ouch.

AMD K7 will go beyond RAS. They will be RAS PC

R-reliability (been in CPU as long as Intel)
A-availability (2 megafabs+Motorola)
S-serviceability (CPQ will carry th torch to support K7 BIG TIME)

P-powerful (put Xeon to dust)
C-cheap (best bang for the bucks.Intel there is no bang all bucks)
