Hi All; Complete computer system now being sold for under $500 in today and yesterday's Seattle P-I and Seattle Times.

I earlier predicted that this sort of thing would get to less than $300 around 2001 back in May:
PC compatible computer purchased by the public to be
in the $100 to $150 range within 3 years. A complete
system with 1kx768 monitor and laser printer should be
around $300

exchange2000.com

Of course that $300 system will have a nicer monitor and laser printer, but the prices of those are dropping as well. These sub $1000 systems are not jokes, they will do everything that the typical employee has to do for his job just as well as the more expensive machines. Technology is starting to stabilize. When you see corporations outfitting their offices with sub $1000 machines, which should begin within the next year, it will mark the beginning of the destruction of the profitablity of the box making industry. Already PC magazines are starting to be amazed at the power of sub $1000 machines. People who read those magazines are going to quit buying the unnecessarily expensive medium end machines, and begin selecting cheaper machines.

Here are the details for the recent ad by CompUSA (symbol is CPU):

Includes monitor and printer. $499.97 after rebates of $380

Packard Bell M II - 266 Multimedia Complete

32MB RAM
2.0GB Hard Drive
24X CD-ROM
56K/14.4 Data/Fax Modem
15" CompUSA PC Color Monitor
Canon BJC-250 Color printer

Upgrade to a 17" monitor for $80 extra.

Same ad has an IBM 350 MHz complete system under $1000
