An addendum to the above. When I predicted computer system prices dropping to $300, it was doubted by the DELL bulls. Here is the reply from "Meathead" who quotes some supposed industry expert (obviously not a design engineer) as to why cheap computers are impossible. Note that Meathead misquotes me as to what a complete system with monitor would cost, I predicted that the cost of the computer (as it is usually sold, without monitor or printer) would drop to $100 to $150:

Here is my reply showing what keeps a computer as expensive as it is, and therefore how cheaply they can be made. Clearly, the last six months have shown my calculations to be correct:

I also posted on the future of the display industry. I should note that Friday I accepted a contract to design some electronics for a company making alternative technology electronic display monitors:

Carl -
I earlier predicted that this sort of thing would get to less than $300 around 2001
You are being too conservative, I expect to see this price point in the consumer space within 18 months.

Hi Carl,
Do you think that this will impact DELL in a big way?
This post from Rudedog highlights similar opinions to mine that I have also posted a link to:

I know your reply to me was that you were a hardware guy, but my point was that you still need a lot of NT servers in order to scale up. For example, INTC could make a mobo/chipset that supported more than 4 processors as costs come down and components shrink. However, NT can only address 4 processors for now, hence the need for clustering multiple boxes. So that means greater sales of hardware due to limitations of software.
Yes we agree on the consumer market as you once said, and yes I agree with you, to a certain extent on the business world. Take a look at this post to see why I only agree to a certain extent:

However, I still think we need ever more powerful servers which is the market that DELL needs to keep growing in.
