Kobe Steel, a company based in Japan, is making the first ever-made portable device for VQF format. The device is very small, and as you
can see in the picture it looks pretty nice. It will use SmartMedia flash cards to store music and will have a base 16 MB flash cards and you will be able to expand it to 64 MB. Since Vqf files are smaller than the MP3, you can store more music than mp3 portable devices and at better sound quality. (Vqf sound distinctively better than MP3 at
equivalent bitrates) One revolutionary feature is that this player is
reprogrammable. This mean you can use this player as a mp3 or aac
player by simply uploading the mp3 or aac codec to the player. So,when aac becomes big in the future, you can upload aac files to the player and listen to them, which means you can upload more songs, and get better sound quality. But don't get too hyped yet. This player will go on sale in fall or winter of 1999. So, we have to still wait for
almost a year, probably more. The price is expected lower than $200
USD when it hits the US stores. mp3-2000.com

Is this the competitions for the NCII - LU collaboration on solid state CD players?
