On marijuana, booze, and morons -- Where are you, all you Libertarians? You should step up to the plate on this one. In the meantime, I guess I will have to. :-) Let me begin by saying that I have never smoked pot in my life. Let me also say that I have never even seen anyone else smoking pot. But of course I have close friends and relatives who say they have smoked pot, and continue to do so. None of them has displayed any anti-social behavior. At the same time, I drink (moderately), and have plenty of relatives and friends who drink -- some immoderately. And I have witnessed plenty of their anti-social behavior. There is no doubt in my mind that alcoholics are much more dangerous than potheads. Over 50% (don't remember the exact number) of crimes in this country are committed under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol is also responsible for a huge proportion of fatal traffic accidents. Should we go back to Prohibition? Criminalizing the use of alcohol didn't work. So why criminalize weed? (And don't say it's because weed is the first step towards hard drugs; the same thing can be said of alcohol.) On the other hand, I will grant that as long as the use of marijuana is considered a crime and/or a misdemeanor and/or a "fineable" offense, the President ought not to smoke it, at least not in the Oval Office. Or if he does, he should work actively and publicly to remove marijuana from the battlefield of the bankrupt War on Drugs, and support (not fire) officials in his Administration who advocate bringing a little sanity to the debate on drug use. The biggest "crimes" I see here are 1) the hypocrisy surrounding the marijuana issue, on the part of public officials, and 2) the needless incarceration of thousands of pot-users for nothing more than simple possession. jbe
