Why would ORCL release such BS as indicated here

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Reuters) - Oracle Corp. may need to cut prices, particularly in the database software market, because of intense price competition, the No. 1 database software company disclosed Friday in a regulatory filing.
Oracle said its competitors in that market -- principally International Business Machines Corp., Informix Corp. and Sybase Inc. -- are offering deep discounts to try to recapture or gain market share in the relational database market.

What would be the point of a BS announcement? Are they setting the shareholders up for a buy back? Will they sell more software because of the price cuts? Simply dismissing the words from the horses mouth doesn't answer the questions that such an announcement raises.
