Steve ... Ot....so from a viral or bacterial point of view....we are nothing but reluctant hosts (read resource.)..who are doomed to failure in their war against us (germs)........I object to putting a monetary value on higher life forms....I realize Im a bit biased....gorillas....orangs....chimps...are not here to serve man..or be served to him.......they are part of the creation....and have equal rights to life ...liberty...and pursuit of happiness....check out chapter one in that middle eastern text the bible.....we have millions of wild mustangs that are being removed from the west.....their not so recent ancestor was eaten off their former range by relatives of the Makah...if their man hood quest is in NEED of a target..let them break horses....whales have been around for 10's of millions of years...we tough guys have hardly been around the block......by the way Steve....most scientific FACT is an opinion....that is all too often delegated to the dust bin of time once the new view is BELIEVED......evolution of view is the only fact..........our opinion that this worlds creations were made for our disposal has created a hell realm.....they dont NEED to kill whales they WANT too......just my view....but a sad statement as to our place in nature......Tyrant king.....Tim

Hi Steven,

Re: Banning whale hunting because they are endangered as a species is valid. Banning the hunt because you think they should be treated differently than all the other lifeforms is not.

How about instead of banning an activity (which as any child knows is a sure-fire way to increase the attractiveness of that activity), we help to make it economically advantageous for them to act in the other direction?

See my recent post: Message 5911928

I think whales are more intelligent than, say, sharks. And I think we should attempt to share the Earth with our neighbors, rather than slaughtering them. Especially when 1) it's not necessary to do so for survival, and 2) a lot more money can be made shooting cameras than can be had shooting harpoons.

And to put on my "weird" hat, I would also add that in less than 12 years, we'll be able to create any kind of meat we want from a device the size of your microwave (see the links in my profile for more information on nanotechnology). So for 12 more years we'll need to kill things to survive, but after that -- we will never have to kill another living thing. (We probably won't outlaw killing, so it'll most likely still happen, but to a much lesser extent as residents of a city won't need a herd of cattle to supply the McDonalds' with beef.)

Cheers,
KenB
