Belgacom Ensures Competitive Edge With Siemens /
Newbridge Solution - Networking Solution Offers Superior
End-to-End Network Management

KANATA, ONTARIO--Belgacom, Belgium's national carrier, today
announced that it has deployed the Siemens / Newbridge
MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch to extend its data
network. This solution provides high performance connectivity to
its BiLan (Belgacom Interconnection of LANs) customers. The move
by Belgacom will ensure its competitive advantage over new
alternate service providers, such as cable companies, following
the recent deregulation of the Belgium telecommunications market.

The BiLan network comprises more than 40 MainStreetXpress 36170
Multiservices Switches delivering frame relay, Internet Protocol
(IP) and native cell relay services, all fully managed by the
industry-leading MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager and
serving more than 1,000 corporations. This highly scalable,
comprehensive network management system offers a multi-service
solution that provides effective manageability of services across
the entire network -- from small, remote offices to large
corporate data centers. The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager
also enables Belgacom to support multi-service Virtual Private
Networks (VPNs), offering customers control of their VPNs through
its flexible customer service management capabilities.

Belgacom's network is currently used primarily for applications
such as local area network (LAN) interconnection via frame relay,
and can now concentrate data traffic onto the new high-speed ATM
backbone. The MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switches
provide Belgacom with both flexibility and investment protection,
as they can be deployed in either an access or frame relay/ATM
backbone switching capacity. The network enhancement will be
completed this year, with further expansion planned through 1999
and 2000.

"We selected the Siemens / Newbridge 36170 Multiservices Switch as
it enables us to implement a scalable multi-services network that
offers end-to-end network management," commented Kris Vervaet,
Data Services Manager, Belgacom. "The switches provide a flexible
networking asset, while the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager
helps us reduce our operational costs by providing single-point
network management and configuration. This new networking platform
enables us to continue to offer the most Internet points of
presence in Belgium and satisfy completely our customers' desire
for increased performance."

"Over the many years we have worked with Belgacom, we have
developed an understanding of their business needs and pressures,"
said Nick Godridge, Vice President and General Manager, Newbridge
Networks, Northern Europe. "This close relationship has enabled
us to combine our considerable experience in frame relay, ATM and
IP networking to offer a solution that meets Belgacom's specific
requirements and enhances the range and performance of services to
its customers."

under the MainStreetXpress brand and assembled the industry's most
extensive ATM research and development operation, consisting of
more than 2,000 engineers in five countries.
