OT: Re: reasons to be cheerless on IBM...

1. killed on pc's
What % of total revenues and earnings are pc's? I suspect that they're not even close to what they used to be 5 - 10 years ago.

2. Mainframes suffering...
I've heard just the opposite about mainframe revenues for the next 12 months. In fact they're supposed to be a bright spot.

3. Very exposed to currency risk.
Hadn't heard this. How much more exposed does "very exposed" mean than typically acceptable currency risk?

4. A bubble stock
This is baffling to me. Trading at approximately $120, IBM is trading at 20 times last year's earnings, and less than 16 times next year's earnings estimates. A bubble stock? Dell is a bubble stock (although it does keep going up). The slightest sign of earnings/revenue weakening, and Dell will get the double whammy -- earnings drop AND a multiple drop.

I do agree that 3Q earnings will move the IBM, probably up, unless they mention the A word to much (Asia).

************* OT IBM
Akidron,

Well, IBM is up nearly 40 points since your "reasons to be cheerless on IBM" post on Oct 6. Are you still down on IBM's prospects?

Akidron - *off topic*

I thought you posted some time ago that you were buying Boeing... Are you still in it? I agreed with you on that one, only problem is that the stock went straight down! I have increased my position during the October debacle. It's funny, I did not agree with you on IBM, it's continued to be a teflon stock. I hear your argument on their PC business, but that has been the case for some time now, and desktop boxes does not seem to be the direction IBM is going in anyway. It seems to me that the internet reinforces the argument for some degree of recentralization of data at the server level or higher, don't you think that plays into IBM's hands???

John

As for a 'bubble' stock, Dell's market cap was 100 billion yesterday, IBM's is around 150 billion. They are much more diversified than Dell, what do you think???
