There is a real need to clarify when a President should be impeached and when not and where the line should be. I think it is a good thing that we will have impeachment hearings in the House now because this issue needs to be hashed out. I watched the entire debate yesterday and I think there is real confusion over this mechanism of the Constitution and we will get it clarified now. I don't have any problem with that. What I have a problem with is an open-ended length of office on-going investigation of the President in an effort to find something, anything that can be pinned on him. That didn't happen with Watergate and that didn't happen with Iran Contra. The only time something similar happened was over Bork and over Thomas and all of that was wrong. I thought it was wrong at the time with Bork; I have come to appreciate how wrong it was with Thomas. I thought McCarthyism was wrong. I thought FDR trying to pack the Supreme Court was wrong. There have been many bad things. The question remains; if it ok for a President to break into the opposition during a campaign? Is it ok to set up a separate government with policy and funding independent of Congress as was the case with Iran Contra? Is it ok to lie under oath in a civil case? Nobody tried to impeach Reagan and if anyone should have ever been impeached it was him over Iran Contra. Nixon's impeachment was wrong in retrospect. Nixon should have burned the tapes and he never would have been. He was stupid and really contributed just like Clinton to his problems. Nixon might not have been impeached if he had just come clean right up. Maybe in the end; this will all be for the good of the country.
