Randall,

" Isn't this what the people already at the mill
are there for, however? "

A PR that states they are not keeping records followed by A PR that states that they have a quality issue followed by statements that a manual was created after the quality issue bit them tells me that a methodical production test engineering process does not exist at the mill. It seems that management has taken the position of "learning how to do things" only in the hardest of ways by trial and error...and error...and error.

There is another way. Think about what you are trying to do, create a process to encompass said task, compare the skillset of your team against the skillset requirements of the task, augment or train the team where deficient. I think that Mike McKay is (intermittently) doing this now for GPGI. The fact that this function was not being performed at the mill until Mike got involved indicates that there are serious leadership issues at all levels of management. These issues can be resolved with the proper training and or hiring of production engineering personnel.

The way I see it, profitability is going to require the 50 ton-per-day (or more) production process. Production engineering by qualified personnel will get GPGI profitable much quicker (with less onion peeling) than by fire fighting. Production process development does not have to take 20 more years....or does it???

Tony
