CAN NETCENTER BREAK AWAY? The rumor's been going around for months that Netscape Communications Corp. will spin off Netcenter from its Internet software arm since "pure-play" Internet competitors such as Yahoo! Inc. are accorded huge stock valuations. Indeed, industry analysts and Netscape officials often note that the company's share price would be higher if it was viewed as a so-called "portal" -- a central destination site on the Web -- rather than being tied up with Netscape's less-sexy other business, selling Internet software to businesses.

So what's the hangup? One key reason is Uncle Sam. The Netcenter unit cannot spin off tax free without five years of gross receipts. "You would create a taxable event," says Quincy Smith, Netscape's director of investor relations. Until 1999, that is, when Netscape's tax problem is lifted. Company officials decline to comment on future possibilities.
