The Old Surveyors' Line separates Maryland from Pennsylvania, and extends along that line to the west. The poor Marylanders couldn't join their southern kin in removing themselves from forced association with the damnyankees due to the presence of the Union Army surrounding Washington. Ol' Abe squashed dissent by tossing the mayor of Baltimore and other southern sympathizers into the jug without a trial.
