Monica Lewinsky may be everywhere this Halloween Tuesday October 6 5:10 PM EDT dailynews.yahoo.com By Leslie Gevirtz BOSTON (Reuters) - Monica Lewinsky may show up at your door this Halloween. Costume stores around the country are reporting brisk sales this week in accessories -- such as berets, blue dresses and fake pearls -- that the female star of the presidential sex scandal has made famous. ''The berets are moving very fast. That seems to be her main trademark item,'' Stephen LaLiberte, a manager at Boston Costume in Boston, said. ''But we're also seeing strong sales in blue dresses, conservative suits, brown and black wigs. And, of course, fake pearls,'' LaLiberte added. ''Some are trying to get away with lacy, frilly collars instead.'' With a bit of a frown, he said ''all of our ghosts, ghouls and skeletons are taking a back seat to Monica and Bill.'' Costume stores and their suppliers have noted an increase in sales of latex masks of both President Clinton and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. But mask makers apparently chose not to make one of Lewinsky. ''The lead time for developing a mask is three-to-four months,'' said Tim Hall, creative director at Cesar Inc. in New York City, which supplies latex masks to Boston Costume and other stores nationally. ''Besides, she is a private person and we only make masks of public figures, or if it's a popular character we get the license for it,'' Hall explained. Harold Bengin at Jack's Joke Shop in Boston said most of his customers for the Monica accessories have been men. ''We supply the wigs and berets -- they have to supply their own dresses,'' he said. For a dress, he suggests people visit the Gap. It was Lewinsky's navy-blue Gap dress that she sent to her mother for safekeeping that provided the physical proof of the sexual nature of her relationship with Clinton. ''Usually, the man will grab the Clinton mask and a jumbo cigar, while the woman will want to look like Monica. We have sold some Hillary masks, but Monica is definitely a hotter item,'' Bengin said. San Francisco-based Gap did not return phone calls seeking comment about any sales increase.
