Michelle, The left, that is, the offspring of the old socialists, commies, sixties radicals, have splintered into an indistinguishable mess of tiny fragments--environmentalists, labor activists, feminists, academics, the various identity politics movements--Latino, African-American, gay, etc. Good luck counting them, if you can find them. Certain of their alumni have made it to the big time--look at Congressman Bernie Sanders. Ever heard of Noam Chomsky? (http://www.worldmedia.com/archive/) How about Bruce Springsteen? He plays at Justice for Janitors and other worker protests. They do their stuff, print out their books (South End Press, Sheridan Books), magazines (Z, In These Times, The Progressive), organize protests. I have several acquaintances who see themselves as leftists. They have some good ideas. I appreciate some of what Chomsky has to say about foreign policy. I don't really consider the left dangerous because they don't have weapons, don't want weapons, and don't wish to reduce people's civil liberties and make kids pray in school, as do some on the extreme right. But mostly, they aren't dangerous because they don't want to govern, as do Pats Robertson and Buchanan. They just want to wear their birkenstocks, rail about how the Nation and Mother Jones have sold out and go hear Cornell West speak at the local campus. Their ideas are more dated and tiresome than frightening, in the end. Above all, as jbe points out, the fundamental core characteristic of the American left, what there is of it, is that they hate Democrats (some consider certain members of the black caucus, Barney Frank, and Sen. Paul Wellstone tolerable) as much as they hate the Republicans. They see the Democrats and Republicans as two factions of the ruling business party. But they hate Clinton's guts with a passion because as a supposed moderate, he was able to pass welfare reform and other legislation that would have raised a huge stink had the Republicans tried to get it passed. That's why it cracks me up when these SI conservatives decry the Clintons as a leftist. They obviously have never met any real leftists. In their eyes Bill and Hill aren't even liberals. You know what is really interesting to read. This week's New Yorker magazine, in the Talk of the Town sections, has some writers' perspective on this whole Monica fiasco. Toni Morrison has a wild take on it: she says they're going after Bubba because of his supposed blackness. I know, it sounds whacky. But it's worth a read.
