Dear Dermot: Thanks for the thoughtful post. I think the telling paragraph is this one:

"Microsoft's browser, Case said in the interview, had the advantage of being "componentized," meaning that it could easily be configured to fit into AOL software. Netscape's wasn't, but its executives promised AOL that future versions would be, Case said. Netscape's browser, however, had the advantage of requiring less computer storage space, allowing AOL users to receive it over the Internet faster."

Although touted as damning the following pragraph indicates that it was the clincher- the icing on the cake so to speak- not the sole reason for selecting the MSFT browser:

"Then came the clincher, according to Case. Gates had initially opposed placing the AOLsoftware in Windows. In pretrial testimony, a Microsoft executive said that Gates felt it would be tantamount to "putting a bullet through MSN's head." But eventually Gates came around, offering Case a spot in Windows and the ability to place AOL's "icon" in an "Online Services"folder next to the MSN icon in the screen that Windows displays when a computer is turned on."

Deals like this are made in the media business all the time. What's the big whoop? And the liberal socialists complain about Starr's waste - give one a break!
